Before I went to Nepal in 2001 I thought about some of the photographs that I really wanted to make. A photograph full of backlit prayer flags was in my mental list. I kept looking for the right conditions and finally found them at a temple in Muktinath. It was early evening and I was very greatful for the fast telephoto zoom lens that I was carrying. This is hand held at 1/30th, a minute later the light had gone. This photograph hangs over my desk.
This is one of my favourite photographs. When I came upon this scene the lady was not winnowing but I saw the potential and waited quietly for several minutes before I took this photograph. For my afternoon in Bhaktapur, I decided to use Fuji Astia to get great skin tones.
During the Tihar festival (festival of lights), it is traditional for the Nepalis to place candles outside their homes to welcome Laxmi, the Goddess of Wealth. Ghorepani has hydro-electric power and the electric street and lodge lights overwhelmed the candlelight. However there was a sudden power cut, and the locals lit parafin lamps in the lodges. I went outside with my F100 and tripod and took this photo before the electricty was restored.
This photograph was taken in the busy Upper Antelope Canyon and Eric Peake helped by holding back the crowds! Gayle was terrific and stayed very still throughout the long exposure.
